Whippet Mixes - The Ultimate Guide to Whippet Cross Breeds (2024)

Whippet mixes offer something for everyone. As with all dog breeds, there is an enormous amount of variety in the Whippet family. Whippet mixes all share the grace of the pure Whippet breed along with the characteristics associated with their other parents.

In this post, I’m going to highlight the variety of the Whippet family by presenting you with a run down of the most popular Whippet mixes.

Perhaps it’ll help you find and fall in love with a Whippet cross you can’t resist!

The Whippet

If you’ve read my Whippet information guide, you’ll know that Whippets are sighthounds. Historically they were bred for their speed, agility and keen eye… they made excellent hunters and racing dogs.

These days Whippets are not so much used for hunting and although there are still places where they’re raced. However, Whippets make excellent pets so you’re more likely to find them improving someone’s home!

Want to know more about Whippets? Check out my Whippet dog breed information page to find out everything about this lovely creature!

Whippet Mixes

Sighthounds (especially Greyhounds) mixed with other Sighthounds are known as Longdogs.

Sighthounds crossed with any other non-Sighthound breed are more commonly called Lurchers. Since there are many different sighthound breeds, there are hundreds of Lurcher mix variations… including of course, Whippet Lurchers.

The same is true then for Whippet mixes, of which there are dozens. I’m going to list as many as I possibly can and provide some detail on each.

Over time I’ll create information pages for each Whippet cross breed to explore the specific characteristics of each mix.

So… let’s go!

Whippet American Foxhound Mix – Foxwhip

Whippet Mixes - The Ultimate Guide to Whippet Cross Breeds (5)

The mix between a Whippet and an American Foxhound results in a Foxwhip.

Foxwhips have a friendly personality and are good family pets.

Given the American Foxhound has a reputation as a bit of a howler when left alone, you might need to bear this in mind if your Foxwhip will spend long periods at home waiting for your return!

Like all Whippet mixes, Foxwhips need daily exercise.

  • Weight: 20lbs to 70lbs
  • Size: 20″ to 24″
  • Life Expectancy: 11 to 15 years
  • Temperament: Good natured and fun
  • Exercise Requirement: At least an hour daily
  • Suitable for Families: Yes

Whippet American Pitbull Terrier Mix – Pippet

Whippet Mixes - The Ultimate Guide to Whippet Cross Breeds (6)

A friendly and active breed, the Pitwhip is a mix of American Pitbull and Whippet.

Although Pitbulls have a reputation as aggressive dogs, they’re actually loving, intelligent and obedient dogs. They’re also relatively easy to train… especially compared to purebred Whippets!

  • Weight: 25lbs to 65lbs
  • Height: 18″ to 22″
  • Life Expectancy: 12 to 15 years
  • Temperament: Fun loving, athletic and calm at home
  • Exercise Requirement: At least an hour daily
  • Suitable for Families: Yes

Whippet Australian Shepherd Mix – Miniature Ausseippet

Whippet Mixes - The Ultimate Guide to Whippet Cross Breeds (7)

The Miniature Aussieppet crosses the Australian Shepherd with the Whippet and results in an active dog breed who is social when out at play and relaxed at home with the family.

  • Weight: 25lbs to 65lbs
  • Height: 14″ to 22″
  • Life Expectancy: 12 to 15 years
  • Temperament: Sociable and relaxed when at home
  • Exercise Requirement: At least 45 minutes to an hour daily
  • Suitable for Families: Yes

Whippet Basenji Mix – Basenppet or Whippenji

Whippet Mixes - The Ultimate Guide to Whippet Cross Breeds (8)

The Basenji is a very intelligent breed and is famous for not barking… ever! Since Whippets rarely bark, it’s likely you won’t hear much in the way of vocals from a Bassenpet.

A small and muscular dog, the Bassenppet will be happy at play and enjoy active walking and running.

  • Weight: 22lbs to 40lbs
  • Height: 17″ to 19″
  • Life Expectancy: 12 to 15 years
  • Temperament: Curious, playful and affectionate
  • Exercise Requirement: At least an hour daily
  • Suitable for Families: Yes… especially suited to apartment living

Whippet Beagle Mix – Whipbeagle

The Whippet and Beagle crossbreed results in a clever dog with a happy disposition. It also mixes the speed and sharp vision of a sighthound with the keen nose of a scenthound… the best of both worlds!

The Whipbeagle is loving and loyal and will be a great addition to any family.

  • Weight: 25lbs to 40lbs
  • Height: 13″ to 20″
  • Life Expectancy: 12 to 15 years
  • Temperament: Happy and loyal
  • Exercise Requirement: At least an hour a day
  • Suitable for Families: Yes

Find out more about the Whippet Beagle mix in my detailed guide.

Whippet Bedlington Terrier Mix – Bedlington Whippet

Whippet Mixes - The Ultimate Guide to Whippet Cross Breeds (10)

A super-popular mix, the Bedlington Whippet is a athletically built like a purebred Whippet but has a fluffy exterior from its Bedlington Terrier heritage.

A smaller variety of lurcher, it’s agile, fast and has great endurance as you might expect from a sighthound mixed with a working dog.

  • Weight: 27 to 32 kilos
  • Height: 22″ to 28″
  • Life Expectancy: 12 to 15 years
  • Temperament: Calm and affectionate at home and full of fun at playtime
  • Exercise Requirement: High… at least 1 to 2 hours of exercise and play per day

Find out more about the Bedlington Whippet cross in my detailed guide.

Whippet Border Collie Mix – Collie Whip / Border Collpet

Whippet Mixes - The Ultimate Guide to Whippet Cross Breeds (11)

You might expect Border Collie and Whippet mixes to be dynamically fast runners with a heap of endurance… and you’d be right!

The Collie Whip or Border Collpet (depending on where you are!) has a similar height and weight to the purebred Whippet. However, it may appear slightly larger because of its coat, which is likely to be longer and more fluffy.

Intelligent and loyal, the Whippet Collie mix will be suited to families prepared to provide lots of exercise and playful stimulation.

  • Weight: 25lbs to 55lbs
  • Height: 18″ to 22″
  • Life Expectancy: 10 to 17 years
  • Temperament: Friendly and loving to family but may be initially reserved with strangers
  • Exercise Requirement: High… at least an hour each day
  • Suitable for Families: Yes

Find out more about the Whippet Border Collie mix in my detailed guide.

Whippet Boxer Mix – Boxerwhip

Whippet Mixes - The Ultimate Guide to Whippet Cross Breeds (12)

A strong and muscular, short-coated crossbreed, the Boxerwhip has bags of charm and bags of energy and is always ready for playtime!

The flattish face of the Boxer gives way somewhat to the long Whippet muzzle. While it’s a muscular dog breed its much more slender than a pure Boxer.

Care should be taken with Boxerwhips if you plan to leave them for long periods alone since they can be destructive when bored.

  • Weight: 25lbs to 80lbs
  • Height: 20″ to 25″
  • Life Expectancy: 10 to 12 years
  • Temperament: Playful and energentic
  • Exercise Requirement: High. Daily walks of at least 45 minutes
  • Suitable for Families: Yes… but don’t leave them on their own for excessively long periods

Find out more about the Whippet Boxer mix.

Whippet Catahoula Mix – Whippoula

Whippet Mixes - The Ultimate Guide to Whippet Cross Breeds (13)

The Whippoula is a Whippet crossed with a Louisiana Catahoula. As a result it’s bigger than many Whippet mixes weighing in at up to 90lbs as an adult.

The Whippoula naturally tends towards effectiveness and territoriality so it’s important to train them from puppies to encourage friendliness towards others.

  • Weight: 50lbs to 90lbs
  • Height: 20″ to 24″
  • Life Expectancy: 12 to 14 years
  • Temperament: Protective but will be sociable if trained from a puppy
  • Exercise Requirement: High… at least an hour daily
  • Suitable for Families: Yes

Whippet Chihuahua Mix – Chi Whip

Whippet Mixes - The Ultimate Guide to Whippet Cross Breeds (14)

You’re not expecting a large dog with a Chi Whip are you? Mixing a Chihuahua with a Whippet is never going to result in a giant!

The Chi Whip is a small dog that ranges between 8″ and 18″ so there is some variation in height. However, most will be on the smaller side of the height continuum.

Since they’re generally a small mix they’re likely better suited to spending more time at home than other lurchers and won’t require quite as much exercise.

With a loving and almost needy personality, they’ll be a hit with children and so make good family pets.

  • Weight: 6lbs to 40lbs
  • Height: 8″ to 18″
  • Life Expectancy: 12 to 16 years
  • Temperament: Loving
  • Exercise Requirement: Low… at least 45 minutes daily
  • Suitable for Families: Yes… but a tendency to separation anxiety if left alone for long periods. May not be suitable for homes with very small children

Whippet Mixes - The Ultimate Guide to Whippet Cross Breeds (16)

A right royal mix! The Whipgi has a chunky version of the Whippet’s sleek frame combined with the big eyes and nose of a Corgi.

A generally caring Whippet mix, the Whipgi needs exercise and stimulation to remain happy.

  • Weight: 25lbs to 35lbs
  • Height: 14″ to 17″
  • Life Expectancy: 12 to 14 years
  • Temperament: Caring
  • Exercise Requirement: Medium… at least 45 minutes daily
  • Suitable for Families: Yes but a tendency to herd should be discouraged with training as a pup

Whippet Dachshund Mix – Whiphund

Whippet Mixes - The Ultimate Guide to Whippet Cross Breeds (17)

This one’s a real charmer! The Daschund Whippet cross has a beautiful silky coat and the combined adorable features of these two beautiful breeds.

The Whipphund doesn’t suffer from the stair climbing difficulties that Dachshunds live with and is far more agile and speedy too.

Reserved with strangers, Whipphunds are calm and loving pets but do require exercise. They can be a little stubborn too!

  • Weight: 18lbs to 35lbs
  • Height: 5″ to 21″
  • Life Expectancy: 12 to 15 years
  • Temperament: Calm and loving but reserved with strangers
  • Exercise Requirement: Low… at least 45 minutes daily
  • Suitable for Families: Yes

Find out more about the Whippet Dachshund mix.

Whippet Doberman Mix – Whipperman

Despite the Doberman’s reputation, the Whipperman is one of the friendliest doberman mixes. The Doberman’s intelligence mixed with a Whippet’s loving nature make for a super-sweet crossbreed.

Whippermans have a beautifully shiny coat, most likely with traditional black and tan Doberman colours and an uber-athletic appearance.

  • Weight: 40lbs to 70lbs
  • Height: 21″ to 35″
  • Life Expectancy: 12 to 14 years
  • Temperament: Sweet and intelligent
  • Exercise Requirement: High. At least an hour of mental stimulation and physical activity required daily
  • Suitable for Families: Yes… they may be a little protective of their family though

Whippet English Bulldog Mix – English Bullwhip

Whippet Mixes - The Ultimate Guide to Whippet Cross Breeds (19)

Mix a Whippet with an English Bulldog and you get the imaginatively named English Bullwhip!

Given the English Bulldog is a brave and regal breed, the Whippet mix makes it friendly and alert too. Good with strangers, the English Whippet makes for a good home companion… especially if you have a yard for it to play in.

Since the Bulldog rarely barks or howls it won’t be a noisy Whippet mix. However it has a tendency to snort and snore you and may find these traits pass on to the Bullwhip.

  • Weight: 20lbs to 60lbs
  • Height: 18″ to 20″
  • Life Expectancy: 8 to 15 years
  • Temperament: Easygoing, cheerful and happy
  • Exercise Requirement: High… at least an hour each day
  • Suitable for Families: Yes

Whippet French Bulldog Mix – French Bullwhip

Whippet Mixes - The Ultimate Guide to Whippet Cross Breeds (20)

Smaller than the English Bulldog, mixing the French Bulldog with a Whippet results in a smaller version of the English Bullwhip.

The French Bullwhip is a cute dog with attractive features and is ideally suited to domestic life.

  • Weight: 16lbs to 40lbs
  • Height: 11″ to 21″
  • Life Expectancy: 9 to 15 years
  • Temperament: Playful, amiable and friendly with strangers
  • Exercise Requirement: Medium… at least 45 minutes daily
  • Suitable for Families: Yes… ideal for apartment living

Whippet German Shepherd Mix – German Whippet

Whippet Mixes - The Ultimate Guide to Whippet Cross Breeds (21)

A larger Whippet mix, the German Whippet grows up to 24″ paw to shoulder and weighs up to 80lbs.

It’s an intelligent and loyal crossbreed, loving of its family… and like the German Shepherd, protective of it! It’ll also share the black and tan colours and pointed triangular ears too.

As a bigger dog, you’ll need to provide a good daily exercise regime to keep the German Whippet happy and healthy.

  • Weight: 35lbs to 80lbs
  • Height: 20″ to 24″
  • Life Expectancy: 12 to 15 years
  • Temperament: Loyal, intelligent and energetic
  • Exercise Requirement: High… at least an hour+ each day
  • Suitable for Families: Yes

Find out more about the Whippet German Shepherd mix.

Whippet Golden Retriever Mix – Golden Whippet

Whippet Mixes - The Ultimate Guide to Whippet Cross Breeds (22)

The Golden Whippet is exactly what you might expect. This is one of the most warm, friendly and affable of Whippet mixes, that’s likely to be a big hit with any dog lover who likes to be made a fuss of!

You might expect the golden coat of the Retriever though its fur is slightly shorter given the mix with Whippets. They will shed slightly more too so regular grooming is a must.

Golden Whippets are affectionate and playful… an ideal dog for families.

  • Weight: 25lbs to 75lbs
  • Height: 20″ to 23″
  • Life Expectancy: 10 to 15 years
  • Temperament: Loyal, friendly (even to strangers) and obedient
  • Exercise Requirement: High… at least 1 hour daily
  • Suitable for Families: Ideal for families!

Whippet Greyhound Mix – Grey Whippet

Whippet Mixes - The Ultimate Guide to Whippet Cross Breeds (23)

An interesting mix since Whippets and Greyhounds look like carbon copies… aside from the Greyhound being considerably larger.

The Grey Whippet then is a larger version of the purebred Whippet, with the same aspect, deep chest and short coat. They love a good run too but will be faster than a Whippet and more agile than a Greyhound.

Temperamentally very similar to Whippets so expect slight aloofness with strangers and unbridled devotion to family and friends.

  • Weight: 26lbs to 80 lbs
  • Height: 20″ to 26″
  • Life Expectancy: 10 to 15 years
  • Temperament: Just like Whippets… loving, needy and challenging to train
  • Exercise Requirement: At least 45 minutes to an hour daily with an intense run included
  • Suitable for Families: Yes… but they may not like being left alone for long periods

Find out more about the Greyhound Whippet cross.

Whippet Italian Greyhound Mix – Whippig / Italian Whippet

Whippet Mixes - The Ultimate Guide to Whippet Cross Breeds (24)

The Italian Greyhound, Greyhound and Whippet breeds are are very similar looking dogs because they’re all closely related. Where the Whippet is a smaller version of the Greyhound, the Italian Greyhound is smaller still.

The Italian Greyhound and Whippet mix, the Whippig or Italian Whippet, is also loving and needy with family and slightly reserved with those it doesn’t know.

They’re playful too, enjoy running at pace and love human company, just like Whippets.

  • Weight: 20lbs to 40lbs
  • Height: 17″ to 20″
  • Life Expectancy: 12 to 15 years
  • Temperament: Loving, playful and energetic
  • Exercise Requirement: At least 40 minutes daily

Find out more about the Whippet Italian Greyhound mix.

Whippet Jack Russell Terrier Mix – Jackawhip

Whippet Mixes - The Ultimate Guide to Whippet Cross Breeds (25)

Jackawhips are playful, intelligent and stubborn as you might expect from a Jack Russell and Whippet cross!

A smaller dog than a Whippet, Jackawhips can have a short or slightly wiry coat in which case they need regular grooming.

A fun smaller Whippet mix that might be on the yappy side sometimes!

  • Weight: 14lbs to 40lbs
  • Height: 12″ to 18″
  • Life Expectancy: 12 to 16 years
  • Temperament: Playful, loving and independent at times
  • Exercise Requirement: High… at least an hour daily
  • Suitable for Families: Yes… the Jackawhip’s size makes it suitable for apartment living

Find out more about the Whippet Jack Russell mix in my detailed guide.

Whippet Kelpie Mix

Whippet Mixes - The Ultimate Guide to Whippet Cross Breeds (26)

I’m not sure whether the Whippet Kelpie mix is a Kippet or a Whelpie… and you may never have heard of this mix at all if you’re not from Australia!

The Kelpie is famous as a working dog in Australia and it is not uncommon to see it mixed with a Whippet “down under”.

The Whippet Kelpie is an energetic and athletic dog that’s as loyal as it is loving. As a general rule, it’s a great family dog but it does require a commitment to exercise and play.

  • Weight: 20lbs to 42lbs (9kg to 19kg)
  • Height: 18″ to 22″ (45.5cm to 56cm)
  • Life Expectancy: 10 to 15 years
  • Temperament: Playful, energetic and friendly
  • Exercise Requirement: High… at least an hour a day and possibly more
  • Suitable for Families: Great family dogs

Find out more about Whippet Kelpie cross in my detailed guide.

Whippet Labrador Retriever Mix – Whipador

Whippet Mixes - The Ultimate Guide to Whippet Cross Breeds (27)

What is the result of mixing one of the world’s favourite dog breeds with a Whippet?

The Whipador!

A friendly, loyal and obedient dog, the Whipador is a great family dog but needs exercise and company to keep it’s attention away from your furniture!

The Whippador has the athletic look of the Whippet but with a more solid looking body. It is likely to shed more than Whippets so requires more grooming to keep the dander down.

  • Weight: 25lbs to 80lbs
  • Height: 18″ to 24.5″
  • Life Expectancy: 10 to 12 years
  • Temperament: Playful and friendly
  • Exercise Requirement: High… at least an hour a day and possibly more
  • Suitable for Families: Ideal… loving and amiable but may be reserved with strangers

Find out more about Whippet Labrador cross in my detailed guide.

Whippet Poodle Mix – Whipoodle

Whippet Mixes - The Ultimate Guide to Whippet Cross Breeds (28)

With a keen intelligence and an athletic build, the Whipoodle is a friendly and lively crossbreed.

The Poodle’s intelligence makes the Whipoodle one of the easiest Whippet mixes to train.

It’s coat will be curly or even slightly wavy and it sheds far less than a Poodle.

Obedient, smart and playful the Whipoodle is loyal and affectionate but like other Whippet mixes it requires exercise to curb loneliness if left alone at home.

  • Weight: 15lbs to 40lbs (dependent on Poodle parentage)
  • Height: 18″ to 20″
  • Life Expectancy: 10 to 18 years
  • Temperament: Intelligent, affectionate and loyal
  • Exercise Requirement: High… at least 1 hour daily
  • Suitable for Families: Yes… needs exercise and contact with people

Find out more about the Whippet Poodle cross in my detailed guide.

The Whippet Saluki Mix – A Salippet?

Whippet Mixes - The Ultimate Guide to Whippet Cross Breeds (29)

Salukis are an ancient Sighthound breed with the same athletic physique that Whippet lovers will be familiar with… albeit they’re larger and have either “feathering” or a rough coat.

The Whippet Saluki mix might then result in a dog that’s a little larger than a Whippet. It might also have either a more course coat or silky feathering around the ears, paws and tail.

  • Height: 18″ to 28″ (45.5cm to 71cm)
  • Weight: 25lbs to 65lbs (11.3kg to 29.5kg)
  • Life Expectancy: 10 and 17 years
  • Temperament: Aloof to strangers, loyal and loving.
  • Exercise Requirements: High… up to 1.5 hours daily.
  • Suitable for Families: Yes

Find out more about the Whippet Cross Saluki.

Whippet Shar Pei Mix – Shar Peippet

Whippet Mixes - The Ultimate Guide to Whippet Cross Breeds (30)

The Chinese Shar Pei is famous for the pronounced wrinkles on its head. These will be less pronounced when crossed with a Whippet, but will still be visible giving the Shar Peippet a quizzical look!

Shar Peippets are reserved in their nature and need to be socialised from puppies. Raised properly they’ll be a quite happy family pet though perhaps remain reserved around strangers.

  • Weight: lbs to lbs
  • Height: 18″ to 20″
  • Life Expectancy: 9 to 13 years
  • Temperament: Reserved but loving. Socialise early to bring them out of themselves
  • Exercise Requirement: Medium… at least 45 minutes daily
  • Suitable for Families: Yes… with care training from a young age

Whippet Shorthaired Pointer Mix – Whipoint

Whippet Mixes - The Ultimate Guide to Whippet Cross Breeds (31)

Whipoints can be the result of crossing German Shorthaired or English Pointers with Whippets. This results in a medium-sized dog that’s fast and alert with great vision and a heightened hunt instinct.

As it’s mixed with a Whippet, you’ll need to train a Whipoint as it’s drive to chase is strong and once locked on to something it’s difficult to call it back!

Whipoints are loyal and affectionate with family and confident with strangers.

  • Weight: 25lbs to 75lbs
  • Height: 20″ to 24″
  • Life Expectancy: 12 to 17 years
  • Temperament: Loving and confident
  • Exercise Requirement: High… at least an hour daily
  • Suitable for Families: Yes but daily exercise is a requirement

Whippet Siberian Husky Mix – Hippet

Whippet Mixes - The Ultimate Guide to Whippet Cross Breeds (32)

One of the most adorable looking Whippet mixes, the Hippet bears the looks of both the Whippet and Husky. An elegant athletic body that potentially includes a shorter haired version of the Husky coat, the Hippet will not suffer from the cold like the purebred Whippet.

The Hippet might also retain Husky coat coloration as well as its blue eyes… or even mixed coloured eyes!

  • Weight: 30lbs to 50lbs
  • Height: 19″ to 23″
  • Life Expectancy: 13 to 15 years
  • Temperament: Playful and energetic
  • Exercise Requirement: High… at least 1 hour each day
  • Suitable for Families: Yes

Find out more about the Whippet Husky mix.

Whippet Vizsla Mix – Vizsla Whip

Whippet Mixes - The Ultimate Guide to Whippet Cross Breeds (33)

I’m a big fan of the Hungarian Vizsla and so the Vizsla Whips offer the best of both dogs in my view.

A kind and loving dog, the Vizsla Whip inherits the gentle and affectionate nature of both breeds as well as the enjoying a playful exercise session common to each.

Drop dead cute looks including the long Whippet face and floppy Vizsla ears, the Vizsla Whip is a head turner!

Like most Whippet mixes the Vizsla Whip doesn’t take to being left alone for long periods and so this should be a factor in choosing to share your life with one.

  • Weight: 25lbs to 60lbs
  • Height: 20″ to 23″
  • Life Expectancy: 12 to 15 years
  • Temperament: Gentle and affectionate but needs company
  • Exercise Requirement: High… at least one hour every day
  • Suitable for Families: Yes but don’t leave them alone for too long

Summary

You can see there are a huge variety of Whippet mixes and most of them share the same kind of temperament.

Some need more training than others and some are more reserved in their attitude towards people they don’t know.

However, the Whippet’s gentle and caring temperament within the family unit makes them great pets.

Find out more about Whippet temperament in my detailed guide.

When considering a Whippet or any Whippet mix, you do have to consider how often you’d have to leave them at home on their own. Practically all Whippet mixes need their family around them and don’t like to be left alone for too long.

That’s it for now. I’ll add to this article as I come across new Whippet crossbreeds and also work on producing individual detailed guides for each one as time goes on.

Do you have a Whippet crossed with another breed? I’d love to hear about it. Please share your thoughts and experiences of Whippet mixes in the comments below.
