Have you ever wondered why deviled eggs are called deviled eggs? We did too! It appears that the first references to using the word “deviled” in association to food occurred in the 19th century in association with spicy food, including eggs. Over time the term “deviled eggs” came to mean hard-boiled eggs prepared with spices and mustard mixed with the yolks and then re-stuffed in the egg. Other common terms for “deviled eggs” are “angel eggs”, “stuffed eggs”, “Russian eggs”, “dressed eggs”, and “picnic eggs”.
